Finding Your Niche

When promoting your business, products, or services online, you might feel pressured for your messaging or artwork to “reach” as large of an audience as possible. I mean, all sorts of people are going to see it right?

Not exactly. It’s actually more beneficial to you to narrow down your audience

Why? Because what’s on people’s feeds is specific to their interests, and the algorithm serves them content that fits into those parameters. So if someone likes cooking, that’s the kind of content they’ll be shown. If you’re the creator of a cookbook series, they’re somewhat likely to come across your work. But you can take it a step further. If you’re hoping to reach an audience that includes vegan folks that like to cook, then your vegan cookbook series is definitely going to hit. Maybe these folks are vegan who still like to cook and eat foods similar to Taco Bell or McDonalds. So your vegan junk food cookbook is going to hit even harder.

Do you know what we just did there? We found your niche!

Your niche is the unique products or services you offer that solve a problem for a specific audience. In other words, your niche is what you specialize in. When you’ve identified your niche audience – people who share the same interests and values – it’s a lot more likely that they’re going to find you, too.

Here is a step-by-step list to help you discover your niche:

✔ Identify what you do differently from others, and take notes on competitors

✔ Identify what problems you’re solving in your market

✔ Experiment and see how people react to what you’re offering

✔ Gather feedback from people who try your products or services

✔ Constantly check in with your customers (and yourself)!

✔ Be ready to pivot until you find what works.

Back to your online promotion/brand/persona – forget about trying to be palatable for everyone. If you’ve identified your niche and narrowed down your audience, you can let go of that pressure and create how you want to create.
